GLOW IMAGES - Model is used for illustrative purposesIf you’re a wise consumer, you shop around to find what you need. Today, there’s a product for every taste and helpful advice for just about every inquiry.

When it comes to health care, being an intelligent consumer requires even greater diligent examination.

Since February is National Wise Health Consumer Month, you may have noticed various published tips to guide you.

Most of these recommendations focus entirely on the utilization of conventional medicine. But, if you have ever been curious about spiritual options for healing and health, below are a few word-to-the-wise ideas for those contemplating the use of spiritual/thought-based care.

Keep your family safe – Improve mental health

Heart-wrenching tragedies stir our desire to aid in the healing process and to prevent further harmful acts from taking place.

As the gun control debate continues, another factor is being discussed as a possible connection between this latest and other recent violent acts. This link is mental illness.

31 Orange Jumpsuits – new beginnings

A guard brought me to the classroom where I’d be speaking. I asked, “How many will be here?” He said, “Thirty-one.” I thought, “Wow, you have trouble talking to your own two kids.”

At the front of the empty classroom I paused to get my bearings. My prayer went something like this, “Well, here I am. Thank you for leading me, animating me. Show me how I express your wisdom. Keep reminding me that each one that comes into this room belongs to you. Please, put your words in my mouth.”

Then the procession began. Thirty-one of them, hands behind their backs, slowly made their way to rows of chairs. Thirty-one orange jumpsuits. Four young women. Twenty-seven young men. All in their teens, except two boys, age ten.

Thirty-one. Not one smile. Not one hello. Their body language screamed, “Disdain.”

I was introduced: “This is Mr. Wommack. He’s here to talk with you. Listen up. If you make a noise, disrupt, slump in your seats, or are in any way are out of order you will lose all privileges the rest of the day.”

Unwrap the gift of health this holiday

If you’re like me, your search for what can heal you and keep you healthy continues.

Perhaps, you’ve been hearing a lot about health reform and new models of care. The National Institutes of Health reports that 40 percent of Americans are actively seeking alternative approaches.

Possibly, you like the thought of a patient-centered approach. The idea that you can have more control over your mental and physical wellbeing might appeal to you too.

In addition, you’ve noticed that more and more items on the grocery shelf claim to be good for your health. And this being the holiday season, perchance, you’ve looked up at the mistletoe hanging from doorframes and wondered if that sprig, as well, has possible medicinal benefits.

However, you can forget about the mistletoe.

Are you sick of politics? No, I mean literally!

Overdosed on campaign rhetoric? Tired of political advertisements? You’re in luck. Official vote counting is about to begin.

As tired of this long political season as you may be, there are some who are actually sick and tired. The stress over political battles has impacted their health.

It’s good to be an involved citizen, but, nasty politics can cause extremes in thought and unpleasant physical symptoms. It seems the more negative a political campaign gets, the more illness is experienced.

While you should support and vote for candidates you truly feel can best govern, getting caught up in the anxiety and anger of opposing sides won’t help. It will only add to what harms.

Race to Health Opens Door for Spirituality

There seems to be an urgency when it comes to health care. Perhaps, because of this, more consideration is being given to thought, spirituality, and the powerful connection they have to well-being.

Last year, the American Psychological Association revealed that the use of prayer for health concerns significantly increased from forty-three percent in 2002 to forty-nine percent in 2007.

Many studies have examined the effectiveness of prayer. Most of these studies state that prayer improves health. Some suggest otherwise.

Why the confusion?

For success (and health), mind matters most

It is amazing what people can do when they utilize the might of mind.

Recently, Nik Wallenda grabbed a lot of headlines by becoming the first person in 116 years to walk a tightrope across the Niagara Gorge, and the first ever to stroll right over the falls.

Wallenda is reported to have said that he accomplished the feat through “a lot of praying, that’s for sure. But, you know, it’s all about the concentration, the focus, and the training.”

In my own experience, although I’ve never considered walking over the Niagara Gorge, much less my backyard pool, I’ve found that concentration, focus, and training are quite necessary for health and success.

Key Factor To Health – Your Thought

Posted by Keith Wommack on Jun 25, 2012    |    7 Comments »

Did you know your thoughts affect your health? Really impact you physically? You’ve heard it said we live in a mental world. The indications that support this statement are many.

Case in point:

In the post Your Birthday Can Kill You Newsmax Health shares interesting details from research published in the Annals of Epidemiology. “Overall, the research revealed a 13.8 percent greater probability people will die on the day they were born, said the report.”

If fixating on your birthday causes stress and/or readies you “for a possible major life event on that day,” can’t you assume your thought is a key factor to your health?

Cheating death 101

You enter the room of a gravely ill friend where hope has vanished. Your thoughts weigh heavy. The family expects a quick passing. Doctors have proclaimed there are but a few hours left. The room is dark, both mentally and physically. You feel helpless.

But, what if you could do something, something that made a difference?

Make it a great wait

Because most us are now accustomed to quick access and instant rewards, waiting is irritating. Not only do we wait in doctors’ offices waiting rooms, but we also wait in traffic and in bank and grocery lines. We anxiously wait to hear about job and housing opportunities and, as well, we wait for apologies and I love you’s.

Yet, while we wait, shouldn’t we be utilizing our time wisely? Studies show there is something valuable and productive we could be doing, — something that will help us, even physically. Believe it or not, this beneficial activity is prayer.
